Pink Himalayan Salt: The Only Salt You Need

You have probably heard about pink Himalayan salt in the news, articles, health and fitness feeds on social media, and asked yourself what is all the hype about?  It’s salt.  It’s probably just a fancy trend to make me feel cool and hipster when my not so cool hipster non-fitness friends come over and see that I use “different” salt, because…..well, ….. I read it’s healthy.

Well truth is the hype is well deserved.  Even if you could care less about it health benefits, it makes your food taste incredibly delicious!! That alone is enough to use it.

I would say it’s biggest benefit is that it is packed full of essential trace minerals.  It is claimed to contain 84 essential trace minerals that you may not be getting in your diet.

We put a strong focus on our macronutrients, like our carbs, fats, and proteins, but what about your micronutrients?  *crickets* Yes we do not track our vitamins and minerals, but we can easily be deficient in one or a few if we do not take some action to replenish the body with them in a consistent manner.  Especially with hard workouts and a lot sweating.

Obviously sodium is one of these minerals, but also included to name a few are; Himalayan salt is high in iron, magnesium, phosphorus, calcium, potassium, and chloride.  Trace amounts of boron, fluoride, iodine, zinc, selenium, and copper are found in it as well.

All these minerals are found in Himalayan salt naturally, meaning it is not being added to it in a refinery.

So why can’t I just use normal table salt?

Table salt is void of any of these essential minerals.  So there is no added benefit to adding table salt to your food, except for taste. It is refined and iodine is added to it.  Other than that, nothing to get excited about.  If you are going to add salt, why not get a lot of “bang for your buck”?

So let’s get to the benefits, shall we….

  • Detoxifies the body by balancing systemic pH
  • Improves hydration by providing trace minerals
  • Improves mineral status of the body
  • Reduces muscle cramps by improving minerals and hydration
  • Helps balance blood sugar
  • Supports hormone balance for everyone, no matter what hormonal issues you face
  • Helps balance blood pressure because it provides unrefined, mineral-rich salt in an ionic solution
  • Improves sleep by supporting blood sugar and hormone balance
  • Acts as a powerful antihistamine
  • Supports weight loss by balancing hormones and improving energy
  • Supports thyroid and adrenal function

You can add Himalayan salt by adding it to your food or water.

I wrote a previous blog post on a morning ritual drink I have been using, Energize Your Day in a New Way! If you consume a lot of coffee, tea, sugary drinks, and anything else that will dehydrate you, this will help get your body rehydrated.  Hydration is very important, but that topic is another blog post in and of itself.

I have purchase a little container of Himalayan salt at my local grocer, it is easy to find.  The price is reasonable and will go a long way.  Since I have been using more and I have done some research and found that buying it in bulk can be cheaper.  If you want bulk, you can get a 2lb bag from Onnit.com for what I believe is a reasonable price compared to how many little containers I would have to buy at the grocery store for the same amount.  (If you go to the website I am specifically talking about the 2lb refill bag, not the cute little glass container with wooden spoon).
